Cars, driving and the garage

The words for owning a car in a German-speaking country, from the fuel cap to the compulsory inspection.

Driving in Germany, Austria or Switzerland brings its own vocabulary, and a good deal of it is administrative rather than mechanical. A car has to pass the TÜV every two years, it needs a Versicherung before it can be registered, and the registration itself happens at an office rather than at a dealer. The workshop words are worth having before something goes wrong, because a breakdown is a poor time to look them up.
