Heute findet man fast alles im Internet, und manche Leute meinen deshalb, Bibliotheken seien überflüssig geworden. Es stimmt zwar, dass weniger Menschen Bücher ausleihen als früher.
Dennoch war ich überrascht, als ich letzte Woche die Bibliothek in unserer Stadt besuchte. Es waren viel mehr Leute dort, als ich erwartet hatte: Schüler, die für Prüfungen lernten, ältere Menschen, die Zeitung lasen, und Eltern, die mit ihren Kindern Bilderbücher aussuchten.
Eine Mitarbeiterin erzählte mir, die Bibliothek sei heute nicht nur ein Ort zum Ausleihen, sondern auch ein Ort zum Lernen und zum Treffen. Regelmäßig gibt es Lesungen für Kinder und Abende, an denen jemand über ein Thema spricht.
Natürlich hat auch die Bibliothek Probleme. Viele Besucher wünschen sich längere Öffnungszeiten, aber dafür fehlen Geld und Personal.
Wenn eine Bibliothek nur zum Ausleihen da wäre, könnte man sie vielleicht durch das Handy ersetzen. Orte, an denen jeder kostenlos einen ganzen Tag in Ruhe verbringen kann, gibt es in einer Stadt aber nur wenige.
