Two institutional words carry a great deal here. Die Kita — short for Kindertagesstätte — is the general word for day care, and a place in one is a legal entitlement from the age of one, though not necessarily nearby. And die Elternzeit is job-protected leave that either parent may take, with das Elterngeld replacing part of the income; both are terms you meet on forms long before you meet them in conversation.
