What people do at the weekend — and the club membership that organises a surprising amount of it.

A great deal of German leisure runs through der Verein, the registered club. Football, choirs, allotments, chess, fire brigades and carnival societies are all Vereine, with members, dues and an annual general meeting. Asking somebody bist du im Verein? is an ordinary question, not an odd one. Grammatically this list is where gern earns its keep. German has no verb "to like doing"; it puts gern beside the verb instead: ich schwimme gern. The comparative lieber then gives you "I would rather", and am liebsten "most of all".
