Winter, snow and the slopes

Snow on the road, snow on the mountain, and the duties a German winter comes with.

Winter in a German-speaking country is partly an obligation: die Räumpflicht means the person who lives there has to clear the pavement, and der Winterreifen is required by law when the road is icy. On the mountain the two kinds of track are kept apart in a way English does not bother with — die Piste is for downhill, die Loipe for cross-country, and no one confuses them.
