Enrolling, sitting exams and the administrative vocabulary of a German degree.
A few structural facts make this vocabulary easier to hold. Enrolment is a formal act called die Immatrikulation, and the semester fee it involves usually includes a public transport pass. Entry to popular subjects is limited by a grade threshold, der Numerus clausus, which changes each year. And a degree has a nominal length, die Regelstudienzeit, which matters for funding rather than for permission to keep studying.
