The skilled trades
The trades, their tools and the qualifications that go with them.
The German trades are organised around a formal qualification ladder that has no close English equivalent: Lehrling or Auszubildender during training, Geselle after passing the first examination, and Meister after a second one — which for a number of trades is still required before running a business or training apprentices. That is why the word Meister appears on so many shopfronts.
