कारण, नतीजे और शर्तों के बारे में बात करने के लिए ज़रूरी शब्द।
यहाँ से बिना विषय वाले शब्द अमूर्त होने लगते हैं: ये किसी एक क्षेत्र के नहीं हैं, फिर भी हर लंबे पाठ में आते हैं — रिपोर्ट में भी और उपन्यास में भी। दो शब्दों पर ख़ास ध्यान दो। Record हिन्दी में "रिकॉर्ड" बनकर अक्सर सबसे अच्छे नतीजे के लिए आता है, पर यहाँ इसका मतलब है लिखित दर्ज जानकारी; क्रिया to record का मतलब है दर्ज करना या रिकॉर्ड करना। और to attempt बस कोशिश करना है — इसमें कोई हमला या ज़ोर-ज़बरदस्ती नहीं है।
