अंग्रेज़ी मात्रा को इस आधार पर बाँटती है कि चीज़ गिनी जा सकती है या नहीं। Amount न गिनी जाने वाली चीज़ों के लिए है — the amount of time, a small amount of water — और number गिनी जाने वाली चीज़ों के लिए: the number of people। हिन्दी में भी "मात्रा" और "संख्या" का यही फ़र्क़ है, पर बोलचाल में यह अक्सर धुँधला हो जाता है। अंग्रेज़ी में यही सीमा तीन और जोड़ियों में लौटती है: much और many, little और few, less और fewer — जबकि हिन्दी में "बहुत" और "कम" दोनों तरफ़ चल जाते हैं। इन शब्दों और कुछ क्रिया-विशेषणों से तुम कोई भी ग्राफ़ समझा सकते हो।
