The superlative and -ísimo

The best of all — and the ending that needs no comparison.

The superlative is built from the article plus más or menos: el libro más interesante, la casa menos cara. What it holds within takes de: el mejor restaurante de la ciudad — not «en la ciudad».

Beside it stands a form that compares nothing at all: the attached -ísimo. Guapísimo is not «the best-looking» but «extremely good-looking». It is the Spanish answer to the English «really, really».

Four adjectives grade irregularly: bueno → mejor, malo → peor, grande → mayor, pequeño → menor. With grande and pequeño this holds for age and standing only; for size you say más grande.

Aufgepasst

The set gets attached with en, because English says «in the city»: el mejor restaurante en la ciudad. In Spanish it is de: el mejor restaurante de la ciudad. A superlative picks one out of a set, and the set takes de.

Falsch:Es el mejor restaurante en la ciudad.
Richtig:Es el mejor restaurante de la ciudad.

Superlative with de, intensifying with -ísimo.
