A2  ·  Ser, estar and hay

hay or está?

What there is takes hay; where something known is takes estar.

Hay says that something exists and brings it in for the first time: Hay un banco en la esquina. Estar says where something already known is: El banco está en la esquina.

One solid rule hangs on that: hay is never followed by a definite article and never by a possessive. Hay el banco and hay mi coche do not exist.

Hay also never changes, not even in the plural: Hay un libro, hay muchos libros. In the past it is había or hubo, singular again.

definiteLa farmacia está enfrente.
possessiveMi coche está fuera.

Falsch:Hay el baño al final del pasillo.
Richtig:El baño está al final del pasillo.

New with hay, known with estar — and hay is always singular.
