Quantities and measures

A quantity takes de — and mucho almost never does.

Between the quantity and the thing goes de: un vaso de agua, un kilo de tomates, una docena de huevos. This holds for anything measured, counted or packaged — and English does the same with «of».

The indefinite quantity words mucho, poco, bastante, demasiado and todo, by contrast, take no de and agree with the noun: mucha agua, muchos libros. They are adjectives, not measures.

Two words break rank: más and menos never change, and demasiado does change, even though the English «too much» does not.

Die typisch deutsche Falle

Aufgepasst

A de gets put after mucho, because English says «a lot of people»: mucho de gente. mucho is an adjective and simply agrees: mucha gente. The de belongs with measures — un poco de is exactly the exception worth remembering.

Falsch:Había mucho de gente en la plaza.
Richtig:Había mucha gente en la plaza.

Measured takes de, estimated does not — and it agrees.
