The trap English speakers fall into

Watch out

Following «it was Ana that said it», que goes in everywhere: Fue Ana que lo dijo. In a Spanish cleft sentence a person takes quien or la que: Fue Ana quien lo dijo.

Wrong:Fue Ana que lo dijo.
Right:Fue Ana quien lo dijo.

The full explanation

In English a part of the sentence is often highlighted by stress alone: «ANA said it.» English also has the cleft sentence — «It was Ana who said it» — and Spanish uses it far more readily: ser, then the highlighted part, then a relative word. Fue Ana quien lo dijo. Es aquí donde vivo. Fue entonces cuando lo entendí.

The relative word depends on what is highlighted: quien or el quefor peoplelo quefor thingsdondefor placescuandofor timescomofor the manner Where English makes do with «that» every time — «it was then that …» — Spanish picks the matching word. And ser is in the same tense as the verb after it: Es Ana quien lo dice, Fue Ana quien lo dijo.

A second pattern puts the known part first and leaves the new part for the end, just like English «What I need is sleep»: Lo que necesito es dormir. And whoever brings an object to the front of the sentence picks it up again with a pronoun: Ese libro ya lo he leído.
