Die Überraschung
Two friends plan a party for a third, who must not find out.
Plans and arrangements. German usually talks about the future in the present tense with a time word — Nächsten Freitag wird Lena dreißig. Watch the separable verb anrufen (Clara ruft Lena an) and the clause with ob, which sends the verb to the end: ob sie kurz zu ihr kommen kann.
Nächsten Freitag wird Lena dreißig. Ihre Freunde Ben und Clara wollen eine Party für sie machen, aber Lena soll nichts davon wissen.
Die Party ist bei Clara. Ihre Wohnung ist klein, aber für acht Personen reicht sie. Ben kauft etwas zu trinken, und Clara backt eine Torte.
Als Geschenk kaufen sie ein Buch über Italien, denn Lena möchte im Sommer nach Rom fahren.
Am Freitag um acht ruft Clara Lena an und fragt, ob sie kurz zu ihr kommen kann. Als Lena ins Wohnzimmer kommt, rufen alle: „Alles Gute zum Geburtstag!“ Lena ist sehr überrascht.
