전통 시장의 변화

우리 동네의 전통 시장은 한때 하루 종일 사람들로 붐비던 곳이었다. 그러나 근처에 대형 마트가 생기면서 시장을 찾는 손님은 크게 줄어들었다.
가게 주인들의 나이가 많아지면서, 가게를 물려받을 사람이 없어 문을 닫는 곳도 늘어났다. 지금은 시장 안의 가게 가운데 삼분의 일 정도가 비어 있다.
이런 상황을 바꾸기 위해 젊은 가게 주인들이 모여 새로운 시도를 시작했다. 빈 가게를 싼 값에 빌려주고, 주말마다 작은 장터를 열기로 한 것이다.
그 결과 시장에는 수제 빵집과 작은 카페 같은 새 가게들이 들어섰고, 주말에는 가족 단위 손님도 많이 찾아오게 되었다. 다만 평일에는 여전히 손님이 적어서 매출이 불안정한 가게가 많다.
삼십 년 넘게 이 시장에서 채소를 팔아 온 한 가게 주인은 예전처럼 되지는 않더라도 사람들이 모이는 곳으로 남았으면 좋겠다고 말했다.
