Everyday verbs

Waiting, looking for, opening, switching on, putting down and taking out.

Korean often keeps apart what English says with one verb: a door that somebody opens is 열다, a door that opens by itself 열리다; putting a thing down is 놓다, leaving it somewhere 두다. A good number of these verbs change their stem — 돕다 becomes 도와요, 자르다 잘라요, 잠그다 잠가요 — and there is no “for” after waiting: 버스를 기다려요.
