The scaffolding

The words without which no sentence stands.

What holds these lists together

These lists belong to no area, which is to say they belong to all of them: the question words, numbers and time, the counters, the basic verbs and adjectives, and the adverbs that set the tone of a sentence. Korean adds two reasons English does not have. It counts with two sets of numbers, a native one and one borrowed from Chinese long ago, and the counter after the number decides which: three apples are 사과 세 개 with the native set, the third floor is 삼 층 with the other, and the time on the clock uses both at once — 세 시 이십 분, three twenty. And the verbs and adjectives are one family: an adjective conjugates like a verb and needs no “to be”, so 바빠요 on its own is “I am busy”. The question words, finally, stay where the answer will stand: 어디에 가요? is literally “where to go?”, with nothing moved to the front. Anyone wondering where to start starts here.
