Everyday verbs, sharper

Native verbs for coping, handling, keeping and putting off.

Almost all of these are native Korean verbs rather than 하다 compounds, and each says more exactly what a simpler verb only roughly covers: 겪다is to go through something hard견디다to bear it버티다to hold out until it ends Several change their stem: 따르다 becomes 따라요, 치르다 치러요, and 베풀다 loses its final consonant before -시-: 베푸세요.

미루다to put off, postponeVerb4
숙제를 자꾸 미루다가 결국 마지막 날에 다 했어요.I kept putting off my homework and in the end did it all on the last day.

The polite form is 바라요; 바래요 is a common misspelling.

살피다to look carefully, checkVerb4
길을 건너기 전에 좌우를 잘 살피세요.Look carefully both ways before you cross the road.
지키다to keep (a promise, a rule); to protectVerb4
한번 한 약속은 꼭 지켜요.Once I have made a promise, I always keep it.

Irregular: 따라요, 따랐어요. Also to pour: 물을 따르다.

Mostly in 영향을 미치다. A different 미치다 means to go mad.

빠뜨리다to leave out; to drop (into)Verb4
