Food from the market, and how it tastes

Meat, fish, vegetables and staples, and the words for taste.

Meat is named after the animal plus 고기: 돼지고기, pork, is “pig meat”, 소고기 “cow meat”, 닭고기 “chicken meat”. Fish you eat is 생선, not the living 물고기. Korean has a word for a taste English has no single word for: 고소하다, the toasted, nutty taste of sesame oil, roasted grain or seaweed. All the taste words are adjectives, which in Korean work like verbs and end the sentence on their own: 이 김치는 너무 매워요.
