Food and drink

The table, the kitchen, the restaurant and the dishes a Korean meal is built from.

What holds these lists together

One word does a great deal of work at a Korean table: 밥 is cooked rice and also a meal, and 밥 먹었어요?, “have you eaten?”, is as often a greeting as a question. A meal is rice, soup and a spread of small side dishes, 반찬, shared by everyone and refilled free of charge. The meal is framed by two phrases, 잘 먹겠습니다 before and 잘 먹었습니다 after, said to whoever cooked or paid. In a restaurant you call the staff with 여기요 and order with 시키다 as well as with the more formal 주문하다. The taste words are adjectives that conjugate, and 맵다, hot and spicy, is irregular: 매워요. Hot in temperature is a different word, 뜨겁다. The lists run from the first bowl of rice to cooking, Korean dishes and food culture.
