Shopping, clothes and money
The shop, the price, the clothes and the bank.
What holds these lists together
Korean prices are counted in ten-thousands. The unit 만 is a single word for ten thousand, so thirty thousand won is 삼만 원, “three ten-thousand won”, and a hundred thousand is 십만 원. Thinking in 만 rather than in thousands takes practice and is the one skill a shopper needs on the first day; 얼마예요?, how much is it, takes care of the rest. Clothes come with their own verbs, chosen by where the thing goes on the body: 입다 for clothes, 신다 for shoes and socks, 쓰다 for a hat or glasses, 끼다 for gloves or a ring — and one verb, 벗다, to take nearly all of them off. The lists go from the corner shop to returns, delivery and the bank, and the loanwords on the way are many: 세일, 사이즈, 카드.
