혼자 먹는 밥

Eating alone in a culture that used to eat together.

An essay in the written -다 style. It argues with itself — presenting a view, conceding a point, coming back — and the connectors that carry that (물론, 반면에, -다고 해서 -는 것은 아니다) are the real lesson.

한국에서 밥은 오랫동안 함께 먹는 것이었다. "언제 밥 한번 먹자"는 말이 인사처럼 쓰일 정도로, 식사는 단순히 배를 채우는 일이 아니라 관계를 만드는 일이었다.

그런데 최근에는 혼자 밥을 먹는 사람이 크게 늘었다. 일인 가구가 증가하고 생활 방식이 다양해지면서, 혼자 먹는 것이 더 이상 이상한 일이 아니게 된 것이다.

식당들도 이런 변화에 맞춰 바뀌고 있다. 혼자 온 손님을 위한 좌석을 따로 만들거나, 일 인분 메뉴를 새로 내놓는 가게가 많아졌다.

물론 이런 변화를 걱정하는 목소리도 있다. 함께 먹으며 나누던 대화가 줄어들면 사람들 사이의 거리가 멀어질 수 있다는 것이다.

하지만 혼자 먹는다고 해서 반드시 외로운 것은 아니다. 바쁜 하루 중에 혼자만의 시간을 가지는 것이 오히려 휴식이 된다는 사람도 많다. 결국 중요한 것은 혼자인지 아닌지보다 그 시간을 어떻게 보내느냐일 것이다.
