드라마에서 배운 반말

A learner who picked up Korean from TV dramas speaks to an older shop assistant the way drama friends talk.

A story about speech levels, told in the plain written style -았다/-었다. In dramas, close friends and family speak in 반말 (casual speech) — and that is exactly why it sounds wrong to a stranger. Look for -게 되다 (to come to, to end up) and -다고 하다 (reported speech).

테오는 한국 드라마를 보면서 한국어를 배웠다. 드라마의 주인공들은 친구와 가족에게 거의 반말을 썼기 때문에, 테오도 자연스럽게 반말을 많이 외우게 되었다.

한국에 처음 온 날, 테오는 숙소 근처 편의점에 들어갔다. 물 한 병을 들고 계산대에 가서, 나이가 많아 보이는 아저씨에게 웃으면서 말했다. "이거 얼마야?"

아저씨의 표정이 잠깐 이상해졌다. 그래도 아저씨는 친절하게 "천 원이에요" 하고 대답했다. 테오는 무엇이 잘못됐는지 몰랐다.

그날 저녁, 테오는 한국 친구 서진에게 이 이야기를 했다. 서진은 크게 웃더니 설명해 주었다. "드라마에서 반말을 쓰는 건 그 사람들이 친하니까 그래. 처음 보는 사람, 특히 나이가 많은 사람한테는 꼭 존댓말을 써야 해. '이거 얼마예요?' 하고 말해야지."

테오는 얼굴이 빨개졌다. 다음 날 테오는 다시 그 편의점에 갔다. 그리고 아저씨에게 "어제는 정말 죄송합니다. 이거 얼마예요?" 하고 물었다. 아저씨는 웃으면서 "한국어 잘하네요!" 하고 말했다.

그 후로 테오는 드라마를 볼 때 누가 누구에게 반말을 하고, 누가 존댓말을 하는지 잘 듣게 되었다. 이제는 드라마가 한국어 교과서처럼 느껴진다고 한다.
