Greetings and set phrases
What is said on meeting and parting, on thanking and apologising, and before and after a meal.
Most of these are whole sentences that Korean says as one unit, and they come in pairs: the person leaving hears 안녕히 가세요 (“go in peace”), the person staying 안녕히 계세요 (“stay in peace”). Politeness sits in the ending, not in a separate word — 고마워요, 고맙습니다 and, to a close friend, 고마워 all say the same thing. When in doubt, the longer form in -습니다 is never wrong with a stranger.
