The Key

Falta una llave, y la búsqueda recorre todo el piso.

También este texto está casi entero en presente. Vive de indicaciones de lugar — in, on, under, next to — y quien lo lee aprende las preposiciones sin tener que practicarlas.

Sam is at the door of the flat. The key is not in his coat. It is not in his bag. He looks in the bag again. There is water and an apple, but no key.

He calls Mira. She is at work. "Look under the mat," she says. Sam looks under the mat. There is only dust. "Then look in your coat," she says. But the coat is inside the flat.

Sam sits down and thinks. In the morning he made coffee. He read the news. He opened the window because the kitchen was warm. Then he took his bag and went out.

Mira comes home at six with her key. The flat is warm and quiet. On the kitchen table, next to the coffee cup, is the key. "It was here all day," she says. Sam says nothing.
