What holds these lists together

The same situation seen from three distances: the job that is ending, the contract that is failing, and the proceedings in which both end up — and beyond them inheritance, patents, the sea and the European Union. Here, for the first time, the word is rarely the problem; the thing behind it is. English has one word, «deposit», where French law has two with opposite effects. Des arrhes let either side walk away, the buyer forfeiting them and the seller paying back double; un acompte binds both. Read one as the other and you have misread the contract. That is why many entries carry a sentence on what the word stands for in France.
