What holds these lists together

Institutions everybody deals with — the state, the health system, the schools — and lists in which the word is the smaller problem. La mutuelle can be translated as «top-up health insurance» without making clear why most people in France have one: the public scheme repays only part of a doctor’s bill and the mutuelle covers the rest, which has no counterpart in a system that is free at the point of use. La classe préparatoire, two years of preparation for the entrance examinations of the grandes écoles, has no British equivalent at all. So many entries here carry a sentence on what the thing is in France, not just a translation.
