Language in use

German for culture: books, music and theatre

Talking about books, films, concerts and the theatre — and finding your way into German culture through them.

33 sentences · 3 dialogues · 20 words

Why this field

The German-speaking countries have dense cultural lives: small theatres and orchestras in many towns, a large book market, film festivals, museums and seasonal festivals. A lot of it is only in German, and it is one of the best reasons to learn the language.

Talking about what you have read, seen or heard is also the easiest way into a conversation with German speakers. These sentences give you the words to say what you liked, what you did not, and why.

  • Spannend means gripping or exciting — it is the standard praise for a book or a film, not “tense” in a bad sense.

    Spannend
