German-speaking countries have an unusually dense network of publicly funded theatres and orchestras, most of them belonging to a city rather than to a company, which is why this vocabulary turns up in local news as often as in the arts pages. One practical point: playing an instrument takes spielen with no preposition — Sie spielt Klavier — and the article is optional, unlike in English.
