Language in use

German for settling in: flat, bank and offices

Registering your address, viewing a flat, opening an account and meeting the neighbours: German for the first weeks.

34 sentences · 3 dialogues · 22 words

Why this field

Moving to a German-speaking country means a few weeks of paperwork: registering your address, finding a flat, opening a bank account, signing up with a health insurer and a doctor. Much of it happens in German, on forms and at counters.

These conversations follow a pattern — the same questions about documents, deadlines and costs. Knowing them in advance turns a stressful appointment into a routine one, and the neighbours are much friendlier when you greet them in German.
