At the doctor's
Describing a symptom, understanding an instruction, and the way German health insurance shapes the appointment.
A German medical appointment starts with one question — was führt Sie zu mir? — and the answer is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. The three sentence shapes that carry almost all of it are ich habe ... for a noun, mir ist ... for a state, and ... tut weh for a place. The system itself explains a few words. Health insurance is compulsory, and a Hausarzt, a GP, writes a Überweisung to a Facharzt, a specialist. A prescription is das Rezept, and a private prescription — das Privatrezept — means you pay for it yourself.
