Neighbours and the shared building

The staircase, the bins, the quiet hours — the parts of German life that are shared with people you did not choose.

Most people in German-speaking cities rent a flat in a building with a shared staircase, a shared yard and shared bins, and a surprising amount of everyday vocabulary belongs to that shared part rather than to the flat itself. Two things are worth knowing before they come up: Ruhezeit, the hours when noise is not acceptable, is a real rule rather than a courtesy, and Mülltrennung, sorting waste into separate bins, is expected of everybody and is where a new arrival most often gets a knock on the door.
