What holds these lists together

One situation at three distances: the job that is ending, the contract that is failing, and the proceedings in which both end up. Here, for the first time, the word is not the problem but the thing behind it. O contrato-promessa translates easily as «preliminary contract», yet it is the usual binding step before the deed when a house is bought, and its deposit, o sinal, follows a rule of its own: a buyer who walks away loses it, a seller who walks away pays it back twice over. That is why many entries carry a sentence about what the term means in Portugal, and why these are words you never pick up in conversation and need in every letter.
