The sixteenth entry is abdicar de, and the English cousin of it has shrunk so far that it can almost never be used. Abdicar is an ordinary Portuguese verb, at home in a contract and in a conversation alike: abdicar de um direito, abdicar de uma pretensão, and in this list Ninguém abdica do direito de ser nomeado como autor. Nothing about it sounds solemn. « Abdicate » reached English from the Latin abdicare, to disown or to renounce, with the same breadth, and then lost nearly all of it. The word now belongs to a crown. A monarch abdicates, and « the abdication » with nothing added names the British crisis of 1936. The single surviving extension is « to abdicate responsibility », which is a reproach rather than a description and has no place in a clause. So a sentence translated straight across — « the author abdicates the right to be named » — reads as though somebody had stepped down from a throne. English puts two plainer verbs there: « to waive » a right, or simply « to give it up ».
