Watch out
English says “at eight” with the plain number, and translated that becomes o osiem. For the time Polish needs the ordinal, declined after o: o ósmej, literally “at the eighth”.

The full explanation
Read it all · about 1 min
For the time Polish counts the hours like “the eighth”: Jest ósma — it is eight o’clock, literally “it is the eighth”. The word understood is godzina (hour), so the ordinal is feminine: pierwsza, druga, trzecia, czwarta, piąta, szósta, siódma, ósma, dziewiąta, dziesiąta, jedenasta, dwunasta. You ask the time with Która jest godzina?
“At eight” is o ósmej: o with the locative (miejscownik), every hour ending in -ej — o pierwszej, o drugiej, o trzeciej. The question is O której?, “at what time?”.
There are two ways to give the minutes. In conversation you say pięć po ósmej (five past eight), kwadrans po ósmej (quarter past eight), wpół do dziewiątej (half past eight — literally “half to nine”), za kwadrans dziewiąta (quarter to nine) and za pięć dziewiąta. At the station, on the radio and in timetables you hear the hour and the minutes, often on the 24-hour clock: ósma trzydzieści, siedemnasta piętnaście.
Worth knowing2
Worth knowing
“Half past two” is “half to three”
English counts the half hour from the hour that has passed: half past two, or in Britain simply “half two”. Polish counts towards the next one: wpół do trzeciej, “half to three”. Say wpół do drugiej for “half two” and you will be an hour early. Quarters work as in English: kwadrans po drugiej(quarter past)za kwadrans trzecia(quarter to)
Jest za kwadrans trzecia. It’s a quarter to three.
Worth knowing
Midday and midnight
Twelve noon is południe, midnight północ: w południe, o północy. For the time of day there are rano (in the morning), po południu (in the afternoon) and wieczorem (in the evening) — the Polish a.m. and p.m.: o ósmej wieczorem.
Spotkamy się w południe. We’ll meet at noon.
