Polish collocations: the noun and its verb

A sentence can be grammatically correct in Polish and still be wrong. A decision is not made but podjęta; an application is not submitted but złożona; you do not pay attention but turn it: zwrócić uwagę. On top of that every verb is a pair: robić zakupy is doing the shopping, zrobić zakupy having done it. Which verb goes with which noun is not a rule but a habit — and habits are learnt in pairs.

Learn the noun with its verb, with the aspect pair and with the case the noun stands in: dotrzymać słowa (genitive), płacić kartą (instrumental, no word for “by”), grać na gitarze, but grać w piłkę. Above each group stands the pair, imperfective first. Where English suggests a different verb, it is in the third column — that is where it goes wrong.
