The trap English speakers fall into

Watch out

English “which” and “that” never change, so the Polish word tends to stay in one form. But książka is feminine, so it is która — and, as the object of “I am reading”, którą. Check the gender of the noun before, and the role in the clause after.

Wrong:To jest książka, które czytam.
Right:To jest książka, którą czytam.

The full explanation

Read it all · about 1 min

A Polish relative clause begins with który, która, które — English “who”, “which” or “that”. The word takes its gender and number from the noun it refers to, and its case from its role in the clause: kobieta, która tu mieszka“the woman who lives here”kobieta, którą znam“the woman (whom) I know”kobieta, z którą rozmawiam“the woman I am talking to”

English has kept a trace of this in “who” and “whom”; Polish uses the full set of seven cases, and który is declined like an adjective: którego, któremu, którym, której, którą. Two English shortcuts do not exist: the pronoun can never be left out (“the book I read”), and a preposition can never be left at the end (“the house I live in”). It is always dom, w którym mieszkam — “the house in which I live”.

In the plural it is którzy for groups of men and które for all others: studenci, którzy przyjechali, studentki, które przyjechały. The relative clause is always set off by a comma, even where English would use none.

After to, wszystko and coś the word is not który but co: To, co mówisz, jest ciekawe “What you are saying is interesting”. For a place you can also say gdzie: tam, gdzie mieszkam “where I live”.

Który pokój jest twój?Which room is yours?
