The full explanation

Read it all · about 1 min

As English turns “read” into “reading”, Polish turns czytać into czytanie. Verbs in -ać take -anie (pisanie, gotowanie, pływanie), most in -ić, -yć and -eć take -enie (palenie, mówienie, siedzenie), and short verbs -cie (picie, mycie, życie). jeść becomes jedzenie.

The verbal noun is neuter and is declined like mieszkanie: Lubię gotowanie, Mam dużo do czytania, przed jedzeniem, po jedzeniu. It keeps the aspect of its verb: pisanieis writing as an activitynapisaniegetting it written

An object after it goes into the genitive (dopełniacz), like English “of”: czytanie książek “the reading of books”, picie kawy, mycie okien. Some verbal nouns have become words of their own: mieszkanie(flat)jedzenie(also food)spotkanie(meeting)

Worth knowing2
  1. Worth knowing

    “Window cleaning” is two words

English can stack a noun in front: “window cleaning”, “book reading”. Polish puts the object behind, in the genitive: mycie okien, czytanie książek.

Gotowanie obiadu zajmuje godzinę.Cooking lunch takes an hour.

  2. Worth knowing

    Infinitive or verbal noun

After lubić, chcieć or umieć the infinitive is usual: Lubię pływać “I like swimming”. Lubię pływanie is possible too and sounds like “swimming as a sport”. After a preposition and as a subject you need the verbal noun: Pływanie jest zdrowe, po pływaniu.

Po pływaniu jestem zawsze głodny. After swimming I am always hungry. (a man speaking)
