The trap English speakers fall into
Watch out
English says “on” before a date, and translating it sends you looking for a preposition — w or na. The Polish date needs none: the genitive on its own means “on” — piątego maja.

The full explanation
Read it all · about 1 min
For the day Polish uses the masculine ordinal, because the word understood is dzień (day): pierwszy, drugi, trzeci up to trzydziesty pierwszy. The month after it is in the genitive (dopełniacz) — just like British “the 17th of October”: Dzisiaj jest siedemnasty października. It is written 17 października, without “th”, or briefly 17.10.2026 — always day first, month second.
“On the 17th” has no preposition: the day goes into the genitive too — siedemnastego października. You ask Którego jest dzisiaj? (what’s the date today?) and Którego? (on which day?). Many people answer that in the genitive as well: Dzisiaj jest siedemnastego. That is quite normal in conversation; the nominative is the more careful form.
The months in the genitive are stycznia, lutego, marca, kwietnia, maja, czerwca, lipca, sierpnia, września, października, listopada, grudnia. “In May”, on the other hand, is w maju, with the locative (miejscownik): w styczniu, w lutym, we wrześniu. The year goes with w and roku: w 2026 roku, “in the year 2026”.
Worth knowing2
Worth knowing
“The third of May” — almost word for word
British English already says “the third of May”, and Polish says exactly that: trzeci maja, “the third (day) of May”. That is why each month has two forms — majon the calendarmajain a date — and a third for “in May”: w maju. And the order is always day, then month: 3.05 is the third of May, never the fifth of March.
Pierwszy stycznia to Nowy Rok.The first of January is New Year’s Day.
Worth knowing
Month names from nature
The Polish month names do not sound like the English ones; many come from nature: lipiec from lipa (lime tree), listopad from falling leaves (liście and padać). And they are always written with a small letter: w lipcu.
Listopad jest często deszczowy.November is often rainy.
