This page describes how the vocabulary is used and is not medical advice; anything about a person’s health belongs with a doctor. Two features of the German system shape the words. Seeing a specialist normally requires eine Überweisung, a referral from a general practitioner, and being off work requires eine Krankschreibung, a written certificate that goes to the employer. Both are documents rather than conversations, which is why their names come up so often.
