German biological terms often exist twice: a Latin or Greek one used in medicine and a native compound used everywhere else. Das Immunsystem beside die Abwehr; die Digestion beside die Verdauung. The native form is the one to learn first, because it is what a package insert and a newspaper use, and it is usually transparent once read from the back.
