숫자, 시각, 달력

숫자로 시작하는 모든 것.

숫자와 시간은 외국어를 배울 때 가장 먼저 진짜로 쓰게 되는 말이에요. 물건을 살 때, 창구에서, 약속을 잡을 때 필요하죠. 한국어 화자에게 어려운 것은 숫자 자체가 아니라 몇 가지 다른 습관이에요. 첫째, 큰 수: 한국어는 ‘만’ 단위로 세지만 영어는 ‘천’ 단위로 세요. 1만은 ten thousand, 10만은 a hundred thousand, 100만은 a million이에요. 둘째, thirteen과 thirty처럼 비슷하게 들리는 수는 강세로만 구별돼요: thirTEEN, THIRty. 셋째, 순서: 한국어는 ‘2024년 5월 3일’처럼 큰 단위부터 말하지만, 영국 영어는 3 May, 미국 영어는 May 3라고 해요. 달과 요일 이름은 항상 대문자로 시작해요. 시각은 한국어처럼 12시간제로 말하고, 오전과 오후는 a.m.과 p.m.으로 구별해요.
