大きさ、量、変化

どのくらい多いか、強いか、速いか――そしてどちらへ変わるか。

ここにあることばは、グラフの説明にも、表を読み取る問題にも、報告書にも必ず出てきます。目立ちませんが、文章の半分を支えています:slightly(わずかに)、roughly(だいたい)、twice as much(2倍)、a sharp rise(急上昇)。これがわかればグラフの線を説明できます。数えられる名詞か数えられない名詞かでnumberとamount、manyとmuchを使い分けることにも注意しましょう。

「〜だけ上げる」の差はbyで表します:raise the price by a euro。

amountは数えられない名詞に、numberは数えられる名詞に使います:the amount of time、the number of people。

イギリス英語では2語、アメリカ英語ではpercentと1語で書きます。「割合」という名詞はpercentageです。

「〜の増加」はa rise in something。動詞ではprices rise(目的語なし)とraise prices(目的語あり)を区別します。
