どんな長い文章にも出てくる、抽象的な言葉。
ここからは、テーマを持たない語彙が抽象的になります。どの分野にも属さないのに、報告書にも小説にも、長めの文章ならどこにでも出てくる言葉です。このレベルで気をつけたいのは、カタカナ語として知っている単語です。controlは「コントロール」ですが、国境での検査はcheckと言います。eventは「イベント」だけでなく「出来事」全般を指し、imageは「イメージ(印象)」より、目に見える「画像、像」の意味でよく使われます。また、informationやadviceのように、日本語では当然数えられそうなのに英語では数えられない名詞がこのレベルから増えてきます。辞書で[U](不可算)の印を確かめる習慣をつけましょう。
