Numbers

Counting from nothing to a crore, halves and quarters, and first, second and third.

Up to ten the Hindi numbers are short and regular; beyond that each one up to a hundred has its own form, and they are learnt like words rather than worked out. Large numbers are grouped the Indian way: लाख is a hundred thousand and करोड़ ten million, written 1,00,000 and 1,00,00,000. Halves have words of their own — डेढ़ one and a half, ढाई two and a half — and are used every day, in shops and with the clock.
