Hindi collocations: the noun and its verb

An English speaker’s Hindi can be grammatical and still wrong. Nobody makes a mistake in Hindi — they do one, ग़लती करना. A bus is not taken but caught, बस पकड़ना; a guitar is not played but sounded, गिटार बजाना; and hunger is not something you are but something that strikes you, मुझे भूख लगी है. Much of everyday Hindi is a noun and a small verb after it, and which small verb belongs to which noun is a habit of the language, not a rule. Habits are learnt in pairs.

Learn the noun and the verb together, and learn the postposition that links the other person with them: किसी का इंतज़ार करना, to wait for somebody; किसी से बात करना, to talk to somebody; किसी बात पर ध्यान देना, to pay attention to something. With होना, लगना and आना the person stands with को and the feeling is the subject, so the verb agrees with the feeling. Where English suggests a different verb, it is in the third column — those are the places where it goes wrong.
