Language in use

Hindi through films and film songs

Going to the cinema, talking about films and songs — and which film lines sound odd in real life.

34 sentences · 3 dialogues · 16 words

Why this field

Hindi films and their songs reach audiences far beyond India and are one of the most common reasons people start learning Hindi. They are a rich source of everyday vocabulary, forms of address and emotion words.

Film dialogue is also larger than life: vows, declarations and dramatic lines that would sound theatrical at the dinner table. This page shows typical cinema Hindi, written for this site — no dialogue or lyrics are quoted — and says where each line belongs.
