The trap English speakers fall into

Watch out

In English “I” likes the film. In Hindi the film seems good “to me”, so the film is the subject: मुझे, and adjective and verb agree with फ़िल्म — feminine, अच्छी लगती.

Wrong:मैं यह फ़िल्म अच्छा लगता हूँ।
Right:मुझे यह फ़िल्म अच्छी लगती है।

The full explanation

Read it all · about 1 min

लगना means “to strike, to be felt”, and Hindi uses it wherever something happens to a person rather than the person doing something. The person takes को; the thing felt is the subject, and लगना agrees with it. मुझे यह गाना अच्छा लगता है, “I like this song”, is literally “to me this song seems good”.

Because the song is the subject, the adjective and the verb follow the song: मुझे यह फ़िल्म अच्छी लगी, “I liked this film” (फ़िल्म feminine); मुझे ये गाने अच्छे लगते हैं, “I like these songs”. Who does the liking makes no difference to the verb.

Bodily feelings work the same way: मुझे भूख लगी है, “I am hungry” (hunger has struck me); मुझे ठंड लग रही है, “I feel cold”; मुझे प्यास लगी है, “I’m thirsty”. All three nouns are feminine, so लगी, लग रही.

Without को and with an adjective, लगना is “to seem, to look”: आप आज बहुत ख़ुश लग रहे हैं, “you look very happy today”. And मुझे लगता है कि …, “it seems to me that …”, is the everyday “I think”.

A closer look

लगना or पसंद होना?

मुझे चाय पसंद है and मुझे चाय अच्छी लगती है both mean “I like tea”. पसंद is a settled preference; अच्छा लगना is closer to how something feels, and in the past it describes a single experience: मुझे खाना बहुत अच्छा लगा, “I really enjoyed the meal”.

Time taken

लगना also measures time and cost: दिल्ली से आगरा तक तीन घंटे लगते हैं, “it takes three hours from Delhi to Agra”; इसमें कितने पैसे लगेंगे?, “how much will this cost?”. The time or money is the subject, so घंटे gives लगते हैं.
