The garden
Beds, tools and the seasons — plus the allotment, which is an institution here.
Many people in German cities garden without owning a garden, on a rented allotment plot: der Schrebergarten or, officially, der Kleingarten. Those plots come with statutes about what may be grown and how high a hedge may be, which is why so much garden vocabulary here overlaps with the vocabulary of rules. The word itself comes from a nineteenth-century doctor’s name.
