Getting to know people, falling out and making up — and one word that says more than English expects.

German draws a sharper line than English between somebody you know and somebody you are close to. Ein Bekannter is an acquaintance and ein Freund is a real friend, and calling somebody a Freund after two meetings will be quietly noticed. The same word also means a boyfriend, so mein Freund and ein Freund von mir say two different things — the second is the safe form when no romance is meant.
